Founder Thoughts

Independence Isn’t About Building Alone. It’s About Creating the Freedom to Choose.

Independence Isn’t About Building Alone. It’s About Creating the Freedom to Choose.

On Independence Day, it’s natural to think about freedom.

Freedom to choose your own path. Freedom to question what has always been done. Freedom to build something different when the existing options no longer make sense.

As I reflect on the journey of building Vicinity, I’ve been thinking a lot about what independence actually means to me now.

I used to think independence meant having the freedom to build my own company—to make the decisions, take the risks, and create something from the ground up.

I’ve learned it means something much bigger.

True independence is having the courage to decide what should exist—and then doing the work to create it.

    Leaving the Familiar Behind

Before Vicinity, I was a real estate agent.

I knew the business from the inside. I knew the frustrations agents faced because I experienced them myself. I knew what I wished I had: better tools, better information, better training, and a way to build real authority around the local expertise agents already possessed.

There were pieces of the solution everywhere.

    But the pieces didn't connect.

And at some point, I realized that if the ecosystem I believed agents needed didn't exist, waiting for someone else to build it wasn't going to change anything.

So I decided to build it.

    That decision was exciting.

    It was also terrifying.

There is something very different about identifying a problem and deciding that you are responsible for creating the solution.

The Reality of Building Something New

Building a company from the ground up has taught me that independence doesn't mean doing everything yourself.

In fact, it's almost the opposite.

The early days of Vicinity were filled with long conversations, endless revisions, difficult decisions, and more questions than answers.

There were nights spent rewriting copy because one sentence didn't quite communicate what we were trying to say.

There were conversations about technology, business models, agent needs, partnerships, positioning, and what we wanted Vicinity to become.

And there were plenty of moments when the easier choice would have been to simplify the vision.

But every challenge forced us to become more intentional.

Every question made us look closer.

Every piece of feedback made us better.

I learned that building something meaningful requires both conviction and humility—the conviction to keep moving toward the vision and the humility to recognize when someone else sees something you don't.

The People Who Changed the Vision

    Then came the agents.

As Vicinity moved into beta, something important happened.

The idea stopped being ours alone.

Agents from different markets, with different businesses, experiences, specialties, and perspectives began interacting with what we had built.

They asked questions we hadn't anticipated.

    They challenged assumptions.

    They suggested improvements.

They showed us possibilities we hadn't considered.

And that became one of the most valuable parts of the journey.

Because a founder can create the vision.

But a community helps shape what that vision becomes.

The agents who have participated in this process haven't simply been testing a platform. They've been helping us build something that is intended to serve a much larger purpose: helping real estate professionals turn the local knowledge they already possess into something more powerful.

What Independence Means to Me Now

I no longer think independence means standing alone.

I think it means having the freedom to choose what you believe is worth building—and surrounding yourself with people who are willing to help you build it better.

It means being willing to challenge an industry standard simply because there might be a better way.

It means listening when your assumptions are wrong.

It means staying committed when the path becomes complicated.

And perhaps most importantly, it means creating opportunities for other people to have more freedom of their own.

That's what I want Vicinity to do for agents.

I don't want agents to simply have another platform.

I want them to have more control over how their expertise is discovered.

More control over how their local knowledge is presented.

More opportunity to build authority in their markets.

And more freedom to differentiate themselves in an industry that is becoming increasingly crowded and increasingly automated.

Because technology should not make agents less important.

It should make their expertise more visible.

    The Road Ahead

There is still an enormous amount to build.

There will be more challenges, more revisions, more unexpected turns, and undoubtedly more late nights.

But the difference now is that we aren't building alone.

We have agents helping shape the platform.

We have professionals bringing their expertise to the community.

We have builders, lenders, vendors, brokers, and industry partners beginning to see what this ecosystem can become.

And we have a growing team that believes the future of real estate should give local expertise a much bigger voice.

That makes this Independence Day feel particularly meaningful to me.

Because I started this journey believing independence was about building something of my own.

    Today, I see it differently.

Independence is about creating the freedom to choose your direction—and having the courage to build the road that gets you there.

To everyone who has challenged us, encouraged us, questioned us, tested Vicinity, joined us, and believed in what we're building:

    Thank you.

    The road isn't finished.

In many ways, we're just getting started.

    Happy Independence Day.
